I was fortunate enough to have talked to and met Kevin Winnick, who was the CEO of Toy2R USA and now, of outsmART originals. I am very happy to have my first t-shirt created by this great new company, and wanted my first design to be one that celebrates the upcoming Chinese New Year, the year of the snake.
I actually spoke to Kevin way back in October of 2012 about this idea and on and off I worked on this design – it took me a while to create since it was so close to all the holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas) and not to mention my daughter’s 2nd birthday. Also I am not as proficient in Illustrator as I am in Flash, so I am proud to say this entire design was create in Illustrator. I was thinking of doing the usual Chinese New Year snakes, cute and friendly, red and gold, to usher in good luck and fortune. However, as I was starting it, I wanted to try adding in sharp teeth, fierce eye, scales, details, etc. to make it look more bad ass – why not go into the new year in attack mode? I felt this design should not say “let’s hope the new year brings us good luck and fortune” but more like “let’s go into the new year and work hard, don’t give up, be strong and conquer all”!
So by the end of it, it came out like this – which I am very happy of. You can’t see some of the details, but if you were to zoom in, you would notice details up to the very last scale.
I hope folks can appreciate this design and the hours of work I put into it – this was not a first revision, there were many many revisions along the way! I’ve attached a pic of how the design looks like in larger form:
