An insight into the thought process and creation of the Spin & Rolling logo, including sketches and rejected designs.

Thought it might be interesting if I shared how I do logo creation, how I came about creating the Spin & Rolling logo. Spin & Rolling is the first skate slalom club in the USA, based in Manhattan, New York. Spin & Rolling was founded in late 2009 as Skate Simple, but changed to Spin & Rolling in early 2011.

Everything goes! Inline skating, skateboard, longboard, in-line hockey, aggressive skating, freestyle slalom, free-riding and everything else that uses small wheels. Their goal is to promote, organize skating events, and grow the sport of freestyle slalom skating in New York and city’s around.

Check out this video to get a better idea of what they do:

The client wanted a logo that represents who they are and what they do: freestyle slalom (Spin) and recording videos of their awesome moves (Rolling). In my mind, there are two essential elements that need to go into this logo: skates and something related to video/film.

As usual, when I begin to do a logo/design piece, I usually try to sketch it out first to see how it looks like before I begin to vector it up. Taking my beat-up/almost-used-up sketchpad and a simple mechanical pencil, I sketched up some simple designs (click images to make it larger):

The sketches were made w/ the two elements I had in mind, trying them together and see what happens. My first initial sketch was the one I liked the most, basic inline skate with a film reel bottom (showing the skate ‘flying’ by) and film wheels as skate wheels:

The words Spin & Rolling would go on top, maybe w/ a banner? Not 100% sure yet, but just sketch it down anyway. I liked the other ideas as well, but this one was my favorite. The client agreed as well.

So I started to do my initial vectoring of this basic sketch – while I feel more comfortable using Illustrator today than I did a few months ago, I still find it a lot easier to do all beginning work in Flash. I can bend lines, make shapes, color, etc. a lot faster than in Illustrator. I will do all final work in Illustrator, but for the basic beginnings, I’ll stick to Flash (for now).

My first vector of an inline skate, using my client’s own personal skate as reference:

Not bad for a first vector, but I found it a bit too complicated; the logo would be used on a variety of items and sizes, so making it too complicated would make it hard on the eyes. So I made it less complex, added some colors that matched the client’s personal skates and gave a few choices to make:

A: No outlines, B: Outlines, C: No outlines and ‘faster’ wheels; also some font choices for the wording (fonts were all free for commercial use).

Client liked the no outlines look of the skate and the ‘faster’ wheels; client did request that the skate be angled about 45 degrees forward. As for font, all were good except #4. I liked #1, so I used that one for the wording. Going back to my initial sketch, the words were in a circular banner, so tested this look in vector form with some design elements like stars and in different colors (sometimes playing around like this helps me to see what works and what doesn’t work). I didn’t like how a banner would look with the words, so instead it became a circle:

From this set of test logos, the client liked the look of the circle, liked the light grey color, but wanted to add cones instead of stars (as with slalom skating, they skate around cones). My only problem so far is that the ‘faster’ wheels don’t look like film wheels anymore; client agreed with me and I can change them back to the normal wheels.

Now that I have a good general idea of what the client wants, I can start to do the full sketch in Illustrator, adding all details and cleaning things up.

So the initial Illustrator vector comes out like this, adding in some more visual elements and giving it a cleaner look:

Not perfect, but not too bad.

Client didn’t like the cone where I placed it and wanted it in the same position as the stars in the other picture. Also client wanted some blue/sky blue color in the logo as well.

When I do logos and designs, I want to make sure the client sees as many possibilities as they can, to make sure they are getting exactly what they want. This is probably not a good idea, but I feel this is very important. I vectored up a few iterations and showed this to the client:

The client chose the same one as me, 2B, which is great. I feel having the skate overlap the outer circle gives it a much nicer look. The client feels the cones are too sharp at the top, and that the blue is too dark.

When working on these logos and designs, sometimes looking at it again with a fresh pair of eyes makes a huge difference. Walk away and come back later and you’ll see things that you didn’t see before. Looking at it again, I felt the logo needed an outer black circle, so I added it in, made rounder top cones, added sky blue colors and came back to the client with these choices:

Client chooses #4 sky blue color but feels the cones are still too long and how would stars look instead…? So one more iteration with cones changed and stars added:

Client likes the new cones and chooses A. Final Spin & Rolling logo:

I hope you enjoyed this blog post and that it gave you an insight into my design process; I know there were many areas which I could have done better, but by giving the client my all and making sure they are happy, is the most important to me. Thanks!

Various designs created for the Ghostface Killah line that were considered for use, cut or rejected!

After creating the Ice Cream logo, I was asked to create some images for the Ghostface Killah merchandise line but wasn’t really given any direction or guidelines on what they wanted. It was pretty much ‘do some designs and see how we like them’. I usually don’t like having such open free reign when working with clients because what I would think of being cool on merchandise can be totally different than what the client would think. It’s such an large open playing field that I just wasn’t sure what to do. And to spend too much time on a design only for them not to like it, would be a waste of time for me.

I know, most people out there would be thinking “well you should charge them for your time by the hour, that way it’s not wasted”. But it wasn’t done this way for me – it was ‘do some designs and if we like them, we’ll use them. If not, then we won’t’. So it’s tough, you want to do well enough so that the design(s) would be used in the merch line of such a great hip-hop artist but at the same time you are potentially wasting time on it only to be dumped. What do I think? I’ll take the risk and see what happens. Yes I may be silly, but where do you get in life if you don’t take chances?

These were some of the designs I came up with – there were many many more, but didn’t feel the need to show them all on this blog.

Being that GFK calls himself ‘Iron Man’, I thought a design w/ the Wu-Tang logo within an arc reactor would be cool. Being that I’m an Iron Man fan myself, this would be an awesome combination of the two. I knew this may have some legal implications, but you never know:

Another design, I tried going a much different direction, a chibi Ghostface Killah masked face! Yes I know he mentioned he didn’t like the mask design, but I thought a cute logo would appeal to fans who wanted a more softer look. I really pushed for this design, but unfortunately GFK and his people didn’t like it:

The “always will be your friend Ghostface Killah” is a line from the song Cherchez La Ghost. I personally still think this is an awesome design, would totally throw people off that that is GFK, but what can you do.

I also thought about using some of his stock pictures and making them into vectors and see how they would look. There were two approaches I could take with that – I could place them into Illustrator and just do a Live Trace or can manually go and vector them into a different look. Since I wasn’t even sure if the client would like this approach, I decided to just do a quick Live Trace and see how it goes. If the client likes it, I would go back and do it much more detailed manually.

I found a pic of Ghost online doing a salute, and coincidentally his Wu Block album (collaborative album with Sheek Louch ) was released around the same time as I was doing this design. The album cover has the American flag within the Wu Block type:

So I came up with this design, and added the Wu-Tang logo, Wu-Tang American flag background and GFK signature:

Thought it was cool, if they liked it I would’ve gone back and really detailed it up.

The client also asked to come up with a smaller GFK type-logo that can be used on socks, hats, etc.. I didn’t want to create something too large to be placed on socks, just something simple, cool and classy to use. I came up with this type treatment:

Big, bold and tough, just like GFK. But for those that didn’t recognize what GFK stood for, the Wu-Tang logo would sure enough let them know.

The next design was based on my love of the GFK album, Supreme Clientele – I always thought the album cover gave Ghost a real classy yet hip-hop look, stands himself out from all the other rappers, which I thought was awesome:

I decided to do another vector design of this cover but not just doing a simple Live Trace, but manually tracing it and using only black and white, giving it a silhouette feel. Again, I didn’t want to go too crazy and add details to it if it wasn’t going to be used. I thought it was enough to convey where I was going with this design:

I made the mic a gold color along with his signature, as the only two items in a different color. I REALLY liked this design and thought it would look so cool on a t-shirt. I was hoping hard they would pick this design. I know that reiterating an older album cover of Ghost may not be where they were heading, but it’s instantly recognizable that I thought they should take a chance on it. And hey, if I’m wrong, then what’s the harm?

At this point, I made many more, another vectorized stock image of Ghost with his eagle bracelet and put one of his lines from the song New God Flow under it, the Iron Man helmet with the Wu-Tang logo, logos for the Ghosts’ Angels and Ghosts’ Loyals on Twitter, etc. I submitted all of them and waited for a response.

After some time, I finally got word that they possibly wanted to use the Supreme Clientele one. They also had some ideas of their own that they wanted to see done. I worked on one of the directions that they wanted to go in – using the “Keep Calm and Carry Arms” logo but making it towards GFK.

I came up with a few, but really liked these; line from the song, Da Mystery of Chessboxin’:

Line from the song Bring da Ruckus:

Since they mentioned that they may use the Supreme Clientele one, I thought it would be cool to detail it up more so that it would look more impressive and finalize the deal (plus I think the finished artwork would look great in my portfolio). I wanted to detail it up but not go overboard on it and came up with this design:

Personally, this is probably one of the coolest pieces of artwork I’ve done so far. I love the look of this.

Submitted what I have done so far and again, no word for a long time. I finally get a response later on and they never really mentioned what I submitted, and told me they are going to stop for now on the line and may pick it back up in the near future. I have no idea why they would do that, but it’s fine, I took the chance of these designs not being used and doing them taught me a lot and gave me much more experience than I had before. Hey you never know, I hope they use them in the future.

This was definitely a learning experience and I hope by sharing what I went through that you will understand some of the highs and lows of the artist/design field. I know I may have made some mistakes during the process, but hey I was starstruck! Please do not hesitate to ask any questions in the comments field, and I’ll try to get back to you. Thanks for reading!

An insight into the thought process and creation of the Ghostface Killah/Wu-Tang Ice Cream logo, including sketches and rejected designs.

Thought it might be interesting if I shared how I came about creating the Ghostface Killah/Wu-Tang Ice Cream logo. Ghost’s people wanted an update to the ice cream logo that can be put onto t-shirts for his merchandise line (Official Ghostface Killah Merchandise). The original logo can be seen in the “Ice Cream” video:

(If you want to watch the video, all you gotta do is go to YouTube and search “Wu-Tang Ice Cream”).

To me, the original logo was very simple, just the Wu-Tang “W” logo with the flavors in text. That’s it. Not much more to it. At first, I thought to try something different with the “ice cream” thought in mind – maybe an ice cream cone with the flavors in different colors? Maybe use the Ghostface Killah hockey mask in the cone and put the ice cream on top of it? The song also had a lyric by Method Man that said “with the cherry on top”, so maybe an ice cream cone w/ a cherry on top?

When I begin to do a logo/design piece, I usually try to sketch it out first to see how it looks like before I begin to vector it up. So taking my sketchpad and a simple mechanical pencil, I sketched up this simple design (click image to make it larger):

The circle with the eyes/mouth and Wu-Tang logo is based on the mask Ghost wears in one of his promotional pictures:

The swirl of ice cream on top would be in different colors to signify the flavors recited in the song: French Vanilla, Butter Pecan, Chocolate Deluxe and Caramel Sundae. A cherry would go on the top (this would also represent something else, but I’ll let you figure that on your own).

However, I didn’t really like the Ghost mask in the logo and Ghost himself told me that he didn’t want to incorporate the mask into his designs anymore, so I decided to take it out. It didn’t really go with the ice cream design anyway; but I like how it looked so far, so decided to do a quick vector of it to see how it would look like.

Anything I do at this point would not guarantee me that it would be used, so to do something too detailed wouldn’t make sense, but to do something too simple would not look good – you need to find a balance between what is simple and too much. I would have to let Ghost’s people look at this and let them decide if they want to use it or not, so it needs to be ‘enough’ for now.

My first initial vector designs of two flavors, Butter Pecan and Chocolate Deluxe in ice cream form (click image to make it larger):

Not bad, how would it look without the outlines?

I like these designs, it’s different and think it would look cool on a t-shirt. I also wanted to give the client something familiar to the old logo but with and updated design. So for another submission, I tried to do something similar to the old logo – I sketched out this design (click image to make it larger):

The elements here are the same as the initial ice cream cone designs – the “W” Wu-Tang logo is the cone, the flavor ice cream is dripping on top of it with a cherry on top. To top it off I added a banner across it with the flavors in different fonts. Simple but effective.

The first initial vector design was the French Vanilla one – thought it would be cool to add the flag of France into the banner (click image to make it larger):

And one without the flag:

I really liked these two designs, so I decided to submit them for review first before I go about creating more in case they don’t like them. I received a positive confirmation for the second design (French Vanilla) and created more for the other flavors. The client also wanted a new one for my Asian women, Asian Persuasion (I know it’s not a ‘flavor’ but that’s what they wanted). You can see all the flavor designs here: Ghostface Killah/Wu-Tang Ice Cream Logo

Contract signed, high-res logos submitted and uploaded, and a few weeks later, it’s officially in Ghostface Killah’s IndieMerch store:

Definitely one of the greatest highlights of my art/design career, to do something for one of the top MC’s in one of the best hip-hop groups of all time. It’s probably the first time I’ve been starstruck to chat with Ghost online as well. I’ve been listening to Wu-Tang since ’92 all the way to this day. Can’t give enough props and respects to Ghostface Killah and his people for giving me this chance and opportunity.

A future blog post and featured project on my site will include other designs that were either considered for use, cut, rejected or never mentioned. Hope you enjoyed this blog post and that it gave you an insight to my design process and help those who are new to the design game.

Designed the background, header and avatar for HipHop-Dojo.com, the pure source of HipHop, Old School & Classic HipHop fashion. Their urban hip hop & streetwear brands include: Wu-Wear, Pyromaniac, Mahagony, The Joker Brand and Playerz69 (http://www.hiphop-dojo.com/).

The avatar was their logo but overlay with a white border and high-res to bring out the logo more when viewing their tweets and on mobile devices:

The header used was the flying Shaolin monk from their website banner – I wanted to retain something from their website that was recognizable and the image was beautifully grainy and raw, something like you’d see out of a Saturday afternoon kung-fu flick. It was a great contrast against the background which consisted of clear vector logos (more on that later).

The header was sized so that when the avatar sits on the image on the main page (http://twitter.com/HipHopDojo), it doesn’t cover up the flying Shaolin monk. I also made the header image a bit darker to bring out the white lettered information better.

The client wanted all the brand logos that they sell to be patterned across the background, so I converted and built each logo into vectors that can be easily sized and displayed much more clearly. I created a pattern with the logos and lightened them so that they are not too bright and more subtly blend into the background. The backdrop used a dark wood theme that was used on their old Twitter design, gave it an overall kung-fu dojo feel. It was also sized so that those with larger monitors can see more of it. Basic info like the URL and brands they sell are on the side:

Full image of all the designs put together:

Another honor for me to design the background, header and avatar for WuTang-Corp.com, the official Twitter page for WuTang-Corp, home of the Wu-Tang Clan and Killa Beez (http://www.wutang-corp.com).

The client gave me some direction as to what he wanted, but I wanted to take it a step further – instead of using the regular “W” logo from the Wu, I made it more polished and shiny, like an icon you’d find on an Apple product. I felt this gave it an up-to-date feel while still maintaining the ‘razor sharp’ edge of the famous logo.

The avatar used the new “W” logo and I made the wording in black on a white overlay and high-res so you can see it better on tweets and on mobile devices:

The header was sized so that when the avatar sits on the image on the main page (http://twitter.com/WuCorp), it doesn’t cover up any of the Wu-Tang member heads – it looks like it’s floating right in the middle of them. I also made the header image grayscale and a bit darker to bring out the white lettered information better:

The background contains information that is simple and concise – “W” logo with title and URL. The group picture gave it a bit more flair and was sized so that those with larger monitors can see more of it. Client wanted a dark brick wall texture so I put that in but made it more subtle to give it a more refined look:

Full image of all the designs put together:

I really enjoyed working on this project and hope I can work with Wu-Tang again in the future. Props goes out to Wu-Tang; please go visit the WuTang-Corp.com Twitter page and follow them!

I was fortunate enough to have talked to and met Kevin Winnick, who was the CEO of Toy2R USA and now, of outsmART originals. I am very happy to have my first t-shirt created by this great new company, and wanted my first design to be one that celebrates the upcoming Chinese New Year, the year of the snake.

I actually spoke to Kevin way back in October of 2012 about this idea and on and off I worked on this design – it took me a while to create since it was so close to all the holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas) and not to mention my daughter’s 2nd birthday. Also I am not as proficient in Illustrator as I am in Flash, so I am proud to say this entire design was create in Illustrator. I was thinking of doing the usual Chinese New Year snakes, cute and friendly, red and gold, to usher in good luck and fortune. However, as I was starting it, I wanted to try adding in sharp teeth, fierce eye, scales, details, etc. to make it look more bad ass – why not go into the new year in attack mode? I felt this design should not say “let’s hope the new year brings us good luck and fortune” but more like “let’s go into the new year and work hard, don’t give up, be strong and conquer all”!

So by the end of it, it came out like this – which I am very happy of. You can’t see some of the details, but if you were to zoom in, you would notice details up to the very last scale.

I hope folks can appreciate this design and the hours of work I put into it – this was not a first revision, there were many many revisions along the way! I’ve attached a pic of how the design looks like in larger form:

Not sure if many people know this but I used to intern w/ Tristan for only a few months a few years ago at Thunderdog Studios when they were based in LIC, NY.

I always admired Tris and his work, and how he’s always been so cool and down to earth even with the success he’s had. When Kidrobot celebrated their 10 year anniversary by releasing the Gold King 8″ dunny, I knew I wanted one to inspire me to work hard and be as successful as Tris one day. However, I only would want a Gold King dunny if he was to sign it for me and unfortunately there was no signing event in NYC.

So I contacted him and Rob Z. at Thunderdog (now in LA), and asked Tris if I sent him a dunny, would he sign it for me. Tris wrote back saying don’t bother sending one to him, he’ll give me one and sign it for me! Wow!

I got it a few days ago and here are some pics:

I am mad happy he personalized it for me and will remain on my inspiration shelf. Tris is not only an awesome artist but a really great guy; I really appreciate Tris doing this for me and for Rob Z. to ship it out, since I know how busy they are.

Props to Tris and Rob! Thanks guys and if you’re looking to hire or need help, you got my contact info!

One of the more difficult things I always had trouble with was using Illustrator to do my vector work.

I have always found using Flash to do vector work so much easier than using Illustrator; with Flash, you can easily bend and shape paths while in Illustrator you had to use Bezier curves/handles. I know people will always say Flash is old and this and that, but in my opinion, whatever software you can use to effectively do your work is a good software. However, since Illustrator is the industry standard for doing vector artwork, I need to learn how to use it.

While putting aside custom work, I spent some time reading, researching, practicing and learning how to use Illustrator, and tried to revise some of my older artwork. The first one done was this new version of my previous “Koi” artwork, done in Illustrator/Photoshop.

I am still reading and learning and hope to do better artwork for the future, but for now, I’m pretty satisfied with how this came out. Thanks for looking (click image to enlarge)!

Day 3 (Saturday, October 13) was going to be my last day at the con. I had to get up early that day and get my car fixed, which left me severely tired, but decided to head down once again to see what was going on…

Headed back to the Block and stopped by Matt’s display to see if there were any new owls added to the collection, and sure enough there were:

Collection is coming along nicely and for the person that bought them all, this will be quite the unique display!

There wasn’t much I wanted to see on the main floor anymore, so just decided to walk around and maybe catch something I missed. I walked by that booth that had the Back to the Future DeLorean on display, but there was something added to it that made it all come together…

Now this guy looks just like Marty McFly! You can pay money to take a picture with him by the car! Even though I loved this movie, I just couldn’t pay the money to take a pic, so this will have to do! Awesome!

Walked around and heard some loud cheering near the Marvel booth, so decided to drop by and see what’s up. The cheering was for actor Clark Gregg, who played S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson – he was on the main display at the Marvel booth. I didn’t listen to the whole speech, but basically he said that “Coulson Lives” in the brand new upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show that will be directed by Joss Whedon! Awesome again!

Wanted to find my friend who was working a booth and stumbled upon the IGN booth that was promoting the new RZA directed movie, “The Man With The Iron Fists”. They announced that they were giving away free limited edition posters, so decided to stay! They threw out some trivia questions, like how long was the original cut of the movie (4 hours), quote a Wu-Tang Clan rhyme (now being the huge Wu-Tang Clan fan that I am, you would think one would pop into my head immediately, but for some reason I froze and couldn’t think of one) – people were shouting “Wu-Tang Clan ain’t nuttin’ to f*ck with” but they said that’s not a rhyme. The person who got a poster was one who spouted the first few lines from “Triumph” – “I bomb atomically…”.

Anyway, they just said screw the questions and started to hand out the posters – stuck my hand out and got one! Poster is pretty dope, I just hope the movie is good or else people will ask why do I have a poster of such a wack movie, lol.

After that, said hello to my friend, headed back to the Block to say my goodbyes and went home – wanted to leave before 7pm and beat the rush.

Some of the stuff I got from the con:

1 – DIY Dudebox figure bought from Tenacious Toys
2 – Rsin signed dunny
3 -Kid Ink Industries blind box hand cast resin TIE fighter pilots encased in carbonite done by Kris Dulfer; birthday present
4 – Greed keychain by Brian of Deadhand Toys; free present
5 – Button from Kristina of Kawaii Vinyl dot com
6 – Zukie artwork by Miss Zukie; birthday present
7 – Sticker from J*RYU

Thank you everyone!!!

Overall I had a great time and it was truly a unique experience. This makes me motivated to do more and show more for the next con. Till next year!

Day 2 (Friday, October 12) was actually my birthday (damn I’m old) and I originally was not going to go to the con, but due to some change of plans and what not, decided to head back down…

On my way to the con, I realized I left without my camera – my daughter Kaylee took it and hung it up near my desk and I totally didn’t see it and left without it, so this update will be without pictures! Sorry! And without pictures I can’t really remember everything I did at the con, so will only write down whatever I can think of (that’s what happens when you turn another year older).

I arrived pretty late in the day, around 4pm and totally missed Rsin’s Kidrobot signing. I actually bumped into Rsin at the Kidrobot booth where he told me the line for his signing was crazy, practically spread across the con floor and security was threatening to shut it down! I heard Kidrobot had to suspend the release and signing afterwards, so was happy Rsin had such a successful event. I managed to snag an Rsin dunny (you know who you are – thanks so much) and had him sign it for me.

After stopping by the Block and chatting it up with some people, I decided to head to the main floor again just to see what’s out there. I made my way to J. Scott Campbell’s booth and he has an incredible style – if you don’t know who he is, Google him and find out. I was tempted to buy one of his books and have him sign it, but decided to save my money. I also looked around at t-shirts, I like cool and different shirts but didn’t really see anything I like. I must have walked around aimlessly for about an hour and half or so, not really buying but looking. Floor was a bit more crowded than day 1, but not too bad.

Came back to the Block, spoke to Dai again from RAWRS and he was nice enough to give me a t-shirt for my daughter, with the only request that I take a pic and send to him. This was the pic I took:

Thanks again Dai! Kaylee loves her shirt!

Alison of the Zukies booth was really nice as well, she heard it was my birthday and decided to give me one of her awesome mini artwork:

Thanks so much Alison!!! If I knew I was going to get some goodies by saying it was my birthday, I should have said it more often!!!

To top it off, Benny told me that while I was out in the main floor looking around, Jeremy Madl, who created the vinyl toy Mad*L, came by the Tenacious Toys booth to take a look at my “Eyes of the Dragon” Mystery Machine custom Mad*L! Benny snapped a pic – only wished I was around to talk to Mad for a bit!

Thanks Mad, hopefully I did your platform proud!

Didn’t stay at the con too long since I had to head home to eat with my family and celebrate my birthday. Great second day and thanks to all for the gifts!
